Square One Law is hosting an employment seminar which will cover a range of highly topical issues including:

  • Employers’ responsibilities and duties when dealing with employees suffering from the menopause, which is increasingly raised as a disability under the Equality Act.
  • Short-term absence and malingering.
  • The role of HR professionals in the Employment Tribunal process.
  • General update on the recent changes and developments in employment law.

Employment senior associate, Eleanor Wilkinson, will focus on an area which is regarded as one of the last workplace taboos; the menopause. Eleanor will cover the duties employers have in respect of employees suffering from the symptoms, consider the legal developments, as well as identify some of the practical steps employers can take to address the impact the menopause can have on its employees.

Intermittent, short-term absence can often raise concerns regarding both an employee’s capability and conduct. Therefore identifying which internal procedure to follow can be tricky. Senior associate, Rebecca Fielding, will consider both capability and disciplinary procedures in the context of absence management and give some key tips on how to tackle short-term absence swiftly and effectively, before it escalates into a longer term problem.

Julie Dalzell, senior associate in the employment team will look at the role of the HR professional in the Employment Tribunal process. Julie will consider each stage of proceedings from the pre-claim conciliation to the final hearing, and consider what support they can provide to put the employer in the best possible position to defend a claim.

Susie Das, senior associate in the employment team will give a general update on recent cases and developments in employment law including looking at cases on the qualifying period for unfair dismissal, ‘philosophical belief’ and discrimination protection, protected disclosures, appeals and unfair dismissal law, and constructive dismissal.
